Harm Reduction
Collective

The Wilkes Harm Reduction Collective is dedicated to meeting people where they are with compassion, dignity, and nonjudgmental support. Our mission is to promote health, enhance well-being, and reduce harm for people who use drugs by providing life-saving resources, education, and connection to care.

Through evidence-based harm reduction strategies, we work to prevent overdose deaths, reduce the spread of infectious diseases, and empower individuals to make safer choices. We believe that every person deserves respect, access to care, and the opportunity to improve their quality of life—no matter where they are in their journey.

By fostering trust, connection, and community collaboration, we strive to create a safer, healthier, and more informed Wilkes County, where individuals are supported rather than stigmatized.

We also offer other supplies such as hygiene, over the counter medications, pregnancy tests, safer sex supplies, etc.

Drug Checking/Testing

WHRC distributes testing strips for both Fentanyl and Xylazine and can demonstrate the technique for getting the most accurate readings. We also partner with UNC Street Drug Analysis Team to mail samples to the lab for better anaylisis to support individuals making better choices for their health.

Street Outreach

Our street outreach program is designed to meet people where they are, providing nonjudgmental, person-centered support in the community.

Our outreach team works with detox centers, treatment programs, jails, MAT providers, shelters, and other community partners to ensure that people who use drugs have access to harm reduction education, naloxone, safer use supplies, and connections to care.

We also engage in direct street outreach, walking through neighborhoods, talking with individuals, and offering essential resources, peer support, and compassionate connection. This grassroots approach helps build trust, reduce stigma, and create pathways to safer choices and healthier lives.

WhyHarm Reduction

The United States is facing an unprecedented overdose crisis, with synthetic opioids like fentanyl driving record-breaking fatalities. In North Carolina, the overdose death rate was 39 per 100,000 people in 2021, resulting in 4,041 deaths statewide.

Learn More

Wilkes County has been significantly impacted by this epidemic. The county’s drug overdose death rate averaged 36.3 per 100,000 residents between 2014 and 2019. Emergency department visits for unintentional medication or drug overdoses have also risen, from 102 cases in 2020 to 159 cases in 2022.

Harm reduction is a proven, life-saving approach that meets people where they are, reducing the risks associated with drug use while promoting health, safety, and connection to care. By providing naloxone distribution, syringe access, rapid testing, and peer support, we prevent overdose deaths, reduce the spread of infectious diseases, and empower individuals to make safer choices.

At Wilkes Harm Reduction Collective (WHRC), we believe that every life is valuable, and everyone deserves access to resources that support their health and well-being—because you can’t recover if you’re no longer here.
